Luis Cepeda | Bios

Luis Cepeda, a native of Santiago de Los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic, has been steeped in the world of art from an early age. His creative journey began to take shape when he enrolled in drawing classes in 1985 at the Institute of Fine Arts in his hometown. It was there that his natural artistic talents began to blossom.

In 1986, Luis embarked on an intensive painting course at the renowned "La Athelier" school, under the mentorship of the distinguished artist and art educator Reynaldo Castellano (Bottin). This key experience played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic sensibilities, ultimately leading to the refinement that characterizes his work today. From 1987 to 1998, Luis Cepeda refined his craft, developing a distinctive customary art style that would go on to define a significant chapter in his artistic journey. His works gained recognition and acclaim, gracing the walls of prestigious galleries in his hometown and across the country.

In 1998, Luis took a bold step, immigrating to the United States, where he continued to pursue his artistic passion. He exhibited his paintings in various cities throughout the state of Rhode Island, bringing his unique perspective and creative vision to new audiences. Over the years, Luis Cepeda's artistic contributions have not gone unnoticed. He has been honored with multiple accolades from the city of Providence and various state representatives, all of which stand as a testament to the profound impact of his artistic endeavors.

ARTIST STATEMENT | Luis Cepeda

Professor Jacinto Dominguez once said: “Cubism should be soft and light, not a dismemberment of the figures like Picasso and Braque did ". Therefore, I try to find softness through light and the transparency of the colors, making absolute use of this great statement.

"I appreciate the colors, the landscapes, and the traditions. They enable me to perceive the relationship of lights and shadows meticulously captured on canvas.

It's a sensation I relish, an emotion I hold dear, yet it doesn't culminate solely with the artwork itself. My work transcends mere representation; it is an extension of self—a fusion of identity, passion, and the essence of my origins. Each stroke tells a story, each color a chapter, weaving together a narrative that is uniquely mine.

I perpetually infuse my creations with my identity, my emotions, and the essence of who I am and where I come from, drawing inspiration not only from my past experiences but also from my current surroundings and the culture that now embraces me within.

"Art is not just about what we create but also about what it stirs within us—a deep connection to our past, our present surroundings, and the essence of who we are."
